someone put a 6 cylinder Dino engine in a Alfa Spider years ago and used to bring it to the local shows. called it an "Alferrari"

over the years, many people have done engine swaps using the Fiat twin cam engines in other cars, but i have never seen a really good swap done on a 124. the V8 swaps are a joke and simply ruin the car with all that weight on the front end.

Since you can fit a 2 liter Fiat engine in any of the spiders by using the later big bump hood, and you can make 140+ crank HP those engines and some tuning without ruining the street drive-ability. I make 130 HP (crank not wheels) in my street tuned 1800, and that engine makes 100HP already at 3000 RPM's. with 130 -150 HP and not too crazy of a cam, the Fiat 124's are actually pretty fast and can keep up with more modern sports cars. no big time engine swap needed.

That Alfa 164 motor is a piece of art! I dont care how it runs,it looks awesome. I'm sure they had a lot of time and money in that Alfa Spider but ,just on aesthetics, it was worth it!I drove a 5-speed 164 a couple years ago and the motor was excellent. It was a bit weird being a front wheel drive though.

Hey all, not sure if I posted here before or when I actually signed up but it appears that my username is active.
So, I've been contemplating an engine conversion myself but mostly because my old twin cam is smokey, smelly, noisey & generally tired.
I've had this car for a long time (since about 1989 I think) and as they say over here, it's a bit like "triggers broom", it had the handle changed a few times and the brush a few times also. Currently it's running a transplanted stock Lancia 2 litre with a nice manifold and two twin choke webers. Perhaps I just need to look for another fiat/Lancia twin cam & just rebuild it, getting it run nice and tight? I will ponder some more.
It's been good to read this thread though, some good posts and interesting thoughts.
Just on the last post, putting a Dino V6 into a 124 spider - I used to run a Dino Coupe (the only one in Ireland at the time) and it was a really lovely engine. The noise made it sound, exotic! Just like an Italian sportscar should. I'm just not sure of the viability of it though, I'm not too sure of how easy it would be to find one - the honda, mazda, rover, Chevy option seems easier (and cheaper!)

there was the fiat dino spider which effectively did the same thing, however the aesthetics of the two cars are not the same, I like the dino spider but LOVE the fiat spider. There is also a rather large cost difference.

The other option (and more feasible if someone was inclined as they are more readily available) is the Alfa V6 Busso engine.
The GTV6 and Milano (75 in other markets) had a North south set up (however gearbox was in a different spot)

I have a plan to put a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo engine in. You didn't get them in the USA - But they a 5 Cylinder Turbo - 220HP standard - and with a Chip 250HP which is more than enough in a Spider

I have a spare engine - and think the 5 Cylinder Sound would be awesome....oneday..

I have just rebuilt my engine - which is a 2000cc Ritmo 130TC Abarth engine on Weber 45s - so must resist..... :D
